6-8 Advancement Requirements
The Platte Valley School District is committed to ensuring that students make appropriate academic progress and are prepared for success at the next grade level. The following expectations apply to all students enrolled in grades 6 through 8.
Purpose: The purpose of this section is to explain the academic requirements for grade-level advancement, the grading scale used in middle school, and the expectations for credit recovery when minimum standards are not met.
Grade-Level Advancement Requirements: To advance to the next grade level, students in grades 6–8 must earn a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.0 for the academic year across all classes taken. A GPA of 2.0 generally reflects satisfactory progress toward grade-level standards.
Failure to Meet Advancement Requirements
Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.0 will be required to make up sufficient credits in order to advance.
- The determination of required credit recovery will be made by school administration.
- Credit recovery must be completed in a core curriculum area that was not successfully passed.
Core curriculum areas include: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies (History)
The school will communicate credit recovery requirements, options, and timelines to students and families.
Grading Scale: The following grading scale is used for all middle school courses:
- 90–100 = A
- 80–89 = B
- 70–79 = C
- 60–69 = D
- Below 60 = F
Transfer Students: Students transferring into the Platte Valley School District from another district or state are held to the same grade-level advancement requirements as all other students.
- Any failed or missing core curriculum classes must be made up.
- School administration will review transcripts and prior coursework to determine appropriate placement and credit recovery needs.
Administrative Oversight and Support: The principal or designee is responsible for implementing these requirements consistently. Middle School may use academic interventions, progress monitoring, and credit recovery programs to support students in meeting advancement expectations. Families are encouraged to maintain regular communication with teachers, counselors, and administrators regarding student progress.
What's needed before you can practice: Parents need to have a physical and the sports fee turned into the office before their child can practice. We will also have the fall sports parent meeting at 5:00pm in the theatre during the Middle School Open House, Friday, August 14.

Welcome back!
As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we do so with a tremendous sense of pride, excitement, and purpose. This year marks a historic moment for Platte Valley Middle School as we open the doors to our new building space designed to support innovation, collaboration, and success for every student. A new building represents more than just walls and classrooms—it represents opportunity...opportunity to grow, to learn, to build meaningful relationships, and to continue shaping a culture rooted in excellence.
At Platte Valley, we believe that high expectations create high outcomes. This year, we will continue to challenge ourselves—students, staff, and families—to “Chase 100.” Not perfection, but a relentless commitment to giving our best effort every single day. When we hold ourselves to a high standard and support one another along the way, powerful things happen.
Our foundation remains grounded in our core values:
- Pride in who we are and the work we produce
- Respect for ourselves and others
- Teamwork as we strive together toward success
- Self-Discipline to stay focused and committed
- Leadership in every action we take
These values are not just words—they are the expectations that will guide us in this new chapter.
To our staff: Thank you for the passion, dedication, and commitment you bring each day. You are the difference-makers in the lives of our students. As we step into this new facility, we also step into an opportunity to elevate our practices, strengthen relationships, and continue building a culture where every student feels supported, challenged, and inspired.
To our families: Your partnership is essential. Together, we can ensure that every student thrives. Your encouragement, communication, and involvement make a meaningful impact on student success, and we are grateful to work alongside you.
To our students: This is your moment. A fresh start. A new environment. New possibilities. We believe in you and your ability to succeed. Show up each day ready to learn, grow, and give your best effort. When challenges arise—as they always do—lean into them. That’s where growth happens.
As we begin this school year, let us remember: “I am because we are… Platte Valley.”
Together, we will create a school year defined by excellence, growth, and success for all.
"High expectations, strong relationships, and a shared commitment to excellence will ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed—and prosper.” CHASE 100!
Let’s make 2026–2027 our best year yet!

Welcome Back, 25-26 Successes, Focus for 26-27
August is here! The time when back-to-school events begin to take place. August athletic practices are set to officially begin, back-to-school sales are starting, and family vacations are wrapping up. Throughout the summer, our team has been hard at work preparing for the new school year—hiring staff, analyzing data, improving facilities, and ensuring a welcoming environment for all.
Thanks to the 2024 bond, construction has been underway across the district, including a new middle school and a variety of capital improvements. The new central office opened in January, which brought the information technology department and district’s internet infrastructure into the new building. This was done with money the district had in hand. We are excited to start the new school year in the new Platte Valley Middle School. While site construction will continue throughout the fall, the end is in sight, and the revamped campus will provide a safer and more community-oriented learning and working environment for our community. Everything that has been and will be completed is exactly what we said we would do. Promise made, promise delivered with nothing more and nothing less.
As the 2026-2027 school year approaches, we are excited to welcome back our students, families, and staff. Before we look ahead, we would like to take a moment to celebrate some of our 2025-2026 accomplishments.
2025-2026 Highlights and Successes. We had several celebrations last year that highlight the strong work Platte Valley School District does on a daily basis; below are just a few:
- Platte Valley School District maintained its A1 rating by Moody’s during its most recent issuer comment and continues to be recognized for its history of “strong financial performance, prudent financial management, and conservative budgeting practices.”
- Platte Valley School District ranked in the top 20 of Best School Districts in Colorado by Niche Rankings.
- Platte Valley School District juniors once again exceeded the national average in the SAT.
- Platte Valley Middle School FFA Program was named the Colorado Middle School Chapter of the Year at this year’s FFA State Conference.
- Platte Valley High School FFA Conduct of Chapter Management (CCM) won a state championship and Platte Valley Senior Brayden Carpio won in Dairy Production competition. The CCM team will compete at the National FFA Convention in October.
- Platte Valley High School FCCLA student Anyelyin Lozoya was a state champion and qualified for the National FCCLA competition in July.
- Platte Valley Senior Megan Hunt was named All-State Choir.
- Platte Valley Sophomore Lilly Rodriguez won a state championship in Pole Vault.
- Platte Valley Elementary Destination Imagination team finished 5th place at the state competition.
- Platte Valley School District again exceeded a 93% student attendance rate, beating the state average, with Platte Valley Elementary leading the way at 94.8%.
These achievements reflect the dedication of our staff and community. While challenges in education are often highlighted, Platte Valley continues to thrive. We have a great amount to be proud of for the year we had and remain focused on continuous improvement and student success.
Focus 2026-2027. As we step into the 2026-2027 school year, we remain committed to building on our prior work and focusing on key areas to ensure continued growth and excellence. Our community is supportive of the idea of public education and more specifically of Platte Valley’s continued work. This continues to be exemplified by our district’s strong attendance rate and participation in all offerings within Platte Valley Schools.
Our focus continues to be on the important things we are charged to do: (1) providing a quality education for all students; (2) providing a safe learning and working environment for students and staff; and (3) ensuring we continue to be financially sound and maintain our current facilities while planning in the District’s best interest for the future. Specifically, our focus heading into the upcoming school year is around the following core themes:
- Academics
- Student Centered Accountability Program (S-CAP): S-CAP is a program set up to improve information, accountability, and better reflect all work measured in state accountability. The S-CAP is focused on delivering timely and meaningful feedback for improvement with consideration of the “whole child” and involves local stakeholders in innovation/improvement work that is supported by a network of peers. This approach is aligned with the District’s Success Skills work, emphasis on using assessment including PSAT/SAT, CMAS, NWEA, and TS-Gold as a valuable tool, but not the lone tool, in measuring success. Platte Valley will begin its onboarding year with the S-CAP in 2026-2027 joining 22 existing small districts from across the state ranging from the eastern plains to the western slope and everywhere between.
- Focus on Education: We continue to focus on the essentials of reading, writing, and math while also providing a broad array of opportunities for all student interests which include engineering, computer sciences, agriculture education, business education, health and family sciences just to name a few. A total of 15 college courses is available to be taken through Platte Valley High School through partnerships with UNC, AIMS, and NJC.
-
Success Skills: We continue to focus on our Student Success Skills, working to thoughtfully and intentionally integrate skills our students will need to be successful and productive members of society. We will hold celebrations in grades 5th, 8th, and 11th /12th. This work is focused on students applying the success skills they have obtained at Platte Valley in addition to academics which include being a Resilient Learner, Creative Problem Solver, Constructive Teammate, and Effective Communicator. The combination of academic skills and success skills are essential for success as an adult.
- A Safe Learning and Working Environment
- Safe and Secure Spaces: Student and staff safety is always a top priority and focus area. The emphasis on having a safe learning and working environment provides the basis for successful learning to take place. This includes bullet proof entries, protective glass film at all ground level areas, district-wide high resolution security cameras, and secure outdoor play and learning environments.
- District & Building Culture: A continued focus on a strong district and building culture conducive to all students and staff with an emphasis on truly getting to know students, an attribute that only small schools can truly excel at.
- Safety Protocols: A focus on our safety protocols, Standard Response Protocol (SRP), through the I Love U Guys foundation.
- Community Partnerships: A strong partnership with North Range Behavioral Health for behaviorist services for student support when needed in addition to our partnership with Kersey Police for School Resource Officer services for added visibility, collaboration, and allowing students to see police in a different light.
- Student and Family Resources: Finally, we continue to partner with the Cook Center and Parentguidance.org to provide resources and supports for our families to help support their students as they grow. Resources include on-demand courses, mental health series, and parent coaching with live virtual workshops. This resource will continue to be free to our families for the 2026-2027 school year through a grant from the WeldTrust. This information can be accessed via the District’s “Families” tab on our district website.
-
Financially Sound, Maintaining Facilities, and Planning for the Future
-
Thoughtful use of Resources with Transparency: We will continue to focus on being transparent with our community on the use of our resources and being financially sound with a focus on using funds to improve education and increase opportunities for students. This transparency can be found in our annual adopted budget, by engaging in our District Accountability, and by reading our regular newsletters.
-
Maintaining Facilities: A focus on using our resources to maintain and take care of the facilities we have to honor the support provided from the Platte Valley community.
-
Thoughtful Planning: Continued focus on thoughtful planning for the future to ensure we protect the high-quality learning and working environments we have as a result of practical and prudent planning.
-
Reminders for Beginning of the Year
-
Middle School Ribbon Cutting: The Middle School Ribbon Cutting and Open House will take place on Friday, August 7th from 4:00–5:30 p.m.. This is a community celebration with refreshments, desserts, and light food. We look forward to celebrating the new building with our community.
-
Continued Sitework Construction: While the new middle school is open for business, we still have significant site work taking place throughout the fall. The demolition of the old building will be taking place through the middle of September due to the amount of asbestos that was required to be abated. New field space and elementary parking and drop off will be completed this fall once the building is completely down.
-
Middle School Student Drop-off and Parking: Speaking of the new middle school, the entrance, parking, and student drop-off for the new middle school is off of 9th Street. The new entrance features both a student drop-off lane and drive-thru lane along with 50 parking spaces. All new parking spaces throughout the district have been intentionally designed to accommodate the larger vehicles we have in our community.
-
Preschool Parking: Preschool parking is off of Hill Street: Please be conscientious of not parking in undesignated parking areas and work to make student drop-off is quick as possible to be considerate of others.
-
No Parking on 5th West of Playground: Parking is no longer allowed west of the elementary school playground off 5th Street. It is a safety issue where we have had students nearly hit by cross-traffic and vehicles backing out of the area. Individuals who park here may be ticketed by Kersey Police. Students will continue to enter the elementary school either through the south playground entrance off Clark Street or the main entrance by the bus loop.
-
Clark Street One-Way: We are still waiting from the Town of Kersey to learn whether Clark Street will be able to continue to function as a west bound one-way from 9th to 5th Street. The idea was always for this to be temporary, and we have requested for this to continue through the fall until all site work is completed. We will make sure to update as we learn more.
-
Bus Loop: Finally, only buses are allowed to enter the new bus loop off of Hill Street. This is not a student drop-off area or parking area.
-
Alma Student Update: Please remember to complete the Alma Student Admissions and Data Update prior to the start of school. The update has useful information, required acknowledgements and forms, and is important to make sure we continue to have updated information for your student. All families are required to complete this prior to the start of school. This link can also be accessed via the “Families” tab on any of our district's and schools' websites.
-
Back-to-School Details: All specific back-to-school information for students will be addressed in the individual school newsletters coming later this week. Additional information about school supplies, pictures, etc., can be found on the Back-to-School Central web page.
Our success as a district requires the efforts of our full staff: teachers, administrators, technology, transportation, food service, finance, and maintenance. It also requires support and buy-in from our community and parents.
Past accomplishments cannot be replicated without continued support for public education from our community. Replicating success comes about through an intentional focus on doing the simple things well repeatedly daily. Success comes when we have our families’ and community’s help in ensuring students come to school and push themselves academically and socially to have the best opportunities possible. We are looking forward to the upcoming school year, where we will focus on pursuing success with the idea in mind that this year will be better than the last; because our students this year deserve it. That is part of Pursuing Excellence for All: For Every Student, Every Day.
Yours in Education,
Jeremy Burmeister, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools
“We have always held to the hope, the belief, the conviction that there is a better life, a better world, beyond the horizon”. Franklin D. Roosevelt
